Tracking analytics is critical to your site’s success. Monitoring your site traffic and keeping track of your audience can give you valuable insights into your users. It will also give you a good indication of what works and what doesn’t.

Google analytics

You can use Google analytics to track all sorts of information. Site visits, page visits, bounce rates, where your users are from, are just some of the stats you can get from Google analytics. Why is this important?

Apart from giving you a good indication of your audience, it also tells you what they’re interested in. Look at the content that gets a good response and figure out why. It may be answering a question that a lot of people ask, or providing useful information for your market.

Looking at your bounce rate is essential. Your bounce rate for a page indicates how many people leave your site after visiting that page. You can also see how long people stay on that page. This will tell you whether the information you’re providing is useful, or whether people need to go elsewhere to find what they’re looking for. Adding internal links can help reduce your bounce rate, but only if the information you’re providing is valuable.

Using A Plugin For Tracking Analytics

WordPress will provide some information to help you keep track of what’s happening in your site. So if you have a free blog, you can still follow your progress on your dashboard. But this information isn’t particularly detailed.

A plugin can provide a more detailed analysis. MonsterInsights is one such plugin. It generates a report from your dashboard (unlike Google Analytics where you’ll need to open a separate page). From here, you can see how active your site has been, bounce rate, unique visitors and other such info.

You’ll also be given a breakdown of new vs returning customers. Plus you can see what sort of devices are bing used to access your site. This is all pretty handy for when you’re figuring out who you’re reaching with your site.

Tracking External Data

Of course, you don’t just want to keep track of your site. While this is a very important aspect of your site’s success, there are other factors to consider. Social Media, for example, can drive traffic to your site and help build up a community. You need to know what’s working on your Facebook or Twitter pages, and what isn’t.

If you offer support perhaps, through an external service, check up on this. Keep an eye on your Newsletter activity – Mailchimp gives you valuable feedback on your campaigns. Track your sales, upgrades and refunds, if you’re using a service provider like Freemius.

You also want to check for mentions. If someone else says something about you, you want to know. If it’s good, great! If it’s negative, such as a complaint or just a rant, then you need to be aware of it, so you can fix it. Bear in mind that not everyone will tag you on social media or link to you when they say something about you, so keep your eyes open.

Tracking analytics, while somewhat time consuming, is a valuable exercise. Having insight into what works (and what doesn’t) can help you improve and grow, so that you can offer your customers an awesome experience, product or service.
